The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) is a government initiative that aims to support schools in providing a sustained response to the coronavirus pandemic and to provide a longer-term contribution to closing the attainment gap.
Through a network of NTP Tuition Partners, schools will be able to access subsidised high-quality tuition from an approved list of providers. The Education Endowment Foundation will be leading the delivery of this part of the programme and has been provided with £76 million from the Department for Education to fund activity in 2020 – 2021.
Through NTP Academic Mentors, trained graduates will be employed by schools in the most disadvantaged areas to provide intensive support to their pupils. Teach First will be supporting the recruitment, training and placement of the first cohort of Academic Mentors and have been provided with £6.4 million to fund this work. The salaries of Academic Mentors will be funded by the Government.
Both pillars are funded as part of Government’s £350m allocation to tutoring, through the £1bn coronavirus catch up package. Further information about catch-up funding, including for early years settings and post-16 providers, is provided on the Department for Education website.
The programme has been designed and developed by a collaboration of five charities – the Education Endowment Foundation, Sutton Trust, Impetus, Nesta and Teach First – working in partnership with the Department for Education. Additional support has been generously provided by KPMG Foundation, Bain & Company, and Freshfields.
The charities have also set up a steering group to help support and co-ordinate the Tuition Partners and Academic Mentors pillars of the NTP and to ensure that the NTP has a positive legacy in the schools system.
Career Tree has also submitted an application to become a Tuition Partner for the National Tutoring Programme. We will use our experience, expertise and existing schools relationships to deliver tuition to the most disadvantaged children. We will also form new school partnerships to support schools leaders and teachers to help young people fulfil their potential, despite the challenges that COVID has caused.
Our bid covers English, Maths and Science tuition for ages 5-16.
If we are successful, the NTP should give some great opportunities to Primary and Secondary schools across London, Luton and Birmingham.
